Creating the Perfect Loaf: Tater Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
-5 potatoes, russet or red
-1-2 cloves garlic, minced
-2 tablespoons olive oil
-1 teaspoon smoked paprika
-1 teaspoon dried thyme
-1 teaspoon garlic powder
-1/2 teaspoon black pepper
-1/4 teaspoon salt
-1/4 cup all-purpose flour
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350ºF (176ºC). Peel, rinse and cube the potatoes.
2. Place the potatoes in a large pot and fill with enough cold water to cover them. Bring to a boil over high heat.
3. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until potatoes are fork tender. Drain and allow the potatoes to cool slightly.
4. Add the olive oil, garlic, smoked paprika, thyme, garlic powder, black pepper and salt to a bowl. Mix until combined.
5. In a large bowl, mash the potatoes with a potato masher or a fork.
6. Add the herb mixture to the potatoes and mix until combined.
7. Gradually add in the all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup at a time and mix until a dough forms.
8. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes, or until a soft and pliable dough forms.
9. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place onto a parchment lined baking sheet.
10. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
11. Allow the tater bread to cool completely before slicing. Enjoy warm or at room temperature with butter, or use as a side to your favorite dish.
Unique Dish, Unique Experiences
Tater bread is a great way to enjoy a unique dish that has cultural significance. I remember growing up eating this bread and feeling a connection to the Appalachian region. The aroma of the spices, the texture of the potatoes, all coming together to create a flavorful and comforting dish.
Tater bread is just one of many southern staples, such as sweet potato casserole and cornbread. What differentiates tater bread from the rest is its particular combination of ingredients and distinct flavor. This is why it is so prized in its home state of Tennessee and beyond. So, if you’re looking for something a little bit different that’s still full of flavor, try out tater bread!
