  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and vanilla.
  3. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking soda and spices.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture until it is fully incorporated.
  6. Add the cocoa powder and mix it until the dough is all the same color. If you are adding in the walnuts, stir them in now
  7. Take 2 teaspoons of the dough and roll it into a ball. Do this with both the plain and cocoa dough.
  8. Press both of the balls together in the palms of your hands and form a ball. Place the ball of dough on a greased baking sheet. Repeat this with the rest of the dough.
  9. Bake in preheated oven for 8-10 minutes.
  10. Let cool before serving.
