Kosher Cookies: The Perfect Treat for Shabbat

Cookies are perhaps the most beloved of all desserts, and when you combine them with the traditional flavors of kosher deli menus, you get a brilliantly delicious treat that’s sure to please. That’s why today, I’m excited to be sharing my recipe for venerable Kosher Cookies, with all the spicy and savory accents that make these sumptuous treats truly special.

First, let’s take a look at the ingredients you’ll need to make these little morsels of goodness. They’re simple, but they combine to capture classic flavors in a wonderful way:

– 2 cups of all-purpose flour
– 1 cup of light brown sugar
– ¾ cup of unsalted butter
– 1 teaspoon of baking powder
– ½ teaspoon of baking soda
– ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon

– ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves
– ¼ teaspoon of ground ginger
– ¼ teaspoon of ground allspice
– ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg
– 2 eggs
– ¾ cup dried currants or raisins

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease two baking sheets.
2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice and nutmeg.
3. In a separate large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
4. Beat in the eggs one at a time until the mixture is thick and creamy.
5. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the dry ingredients and then the currants until the dough is evenly combined.
6. Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on the baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between them.
7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Let cool before serving.

Kosher Cookies make for a delightful accompaniment to a cup of tea or coffee, or can simply stand alone as a sweet mid-day snack. They’re fragrant and flavorful, packed with zesty spices that combine in delicious harmony. And of course, with their ties to the cuisines of Ashkenazi Jews, they make a great addition to Shabbat celebrations, or any other special gathering.
