Ingredients

– 4 cups of all-purpose flour
– 2 ½ teaspoon of active dry yeast
– 2 tablespoons of caster sugar
– 1 ¼ teaspoons of salt
– 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
– 2 cups of water
– 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
– 1 tablespoon of smoked paprika
– 2 teaspoons of oregano

Method

1. Start by adding the flour and salt to a large bowl and mix together.
2. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and stir in the caster sugar. Leave this mixture to stand for 10 minutes, or until it is frothy on top.
3. Create a well in the middle of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture.
4. Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix the dough together until it forms a sticky dough ball.
5. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, until it forms a soft, stretchy dough.
6. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth and leave to rise for about an hour or until it has doubled in size.
7. In a small bowl, mix the garlic powder, paprika and oregano together to create the coating for the loaf.
8. Grease a baking tray and sprinkle over half of the spice coating.
9. Punch the dough to release the air and shape it into a loaf shape.
10. Place the dough onto the baking tray and use a sharp knife to cut deep slashes on the top.
11. Sprinkle over the remaining spice coating and cover with clingfilm.
12. Leave to rise for another 30 minutes, until it is doubled in size.
13. Preheat your oven to 200°C.
14. Place the tray in the oven and bake for 35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
15. Cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes, then enjoy your delicious chewy bread!
